This was taken on an early morning visit to Ash Cave at Hocking Hills. We were lucking enough to not have any crowds when we went. The atmosphere is so much different when you are alone in this massive cave. Ash Cave was named for the large pile of ashes found by early settlers. The largest pile was 100 feet long 30 feet wide and 3 feet deep. It is not known for sure what the ashes were, but the thought is that it was from Indian campfires. This area was excavated in 1877 and arrows, pottery, and animal bones were found. When you are inside this cave, one can definitely see how a person can survive inside of it. We absolutely love visiting here any time of year.
